The best spots, schools and highlights
Denmark is a true paradise for windsurfers. With its diverse coastline, ideal wind conditions, and a variety of spots, the country offers everything a surfer's heart desires. Whether beginner or pro, everyone will find the perfect place to conquer the waves here. In this article, we introduce you to the best windsurfing spots and schools and give you tips for your next trip.
The best windsurfing spots in Denmark
1. Klitmøller (Cold Hawaii)
Klitmøller, also known as "Cold Hawaii," is one of Europe's most famous windsurfing spots. The region offers ideal conditions for surfing and windsurfing, especially with northwest winds. Here you'll find legendary spots like "Bunkers," known for its powerful waves.
2. Vorupør
Just a few kilometers south of Klitmøller lies Vorupør. This spot offers a large bay with gentler waves – perfect for beginners and advanced surfers alike. The breakwater protects against strong winds, while the open coast still offers good conditions.
3. White Sands
Hvide Sande is a versatile spot on Denmark's west coast. Here you can surf the waves of the North Sea as well as practice in the shallow waters of Ringkøbing Fjord – ideal for freeride and freestyle sessions, as well as for beginners.
4. Ringkøbing Fjord
Ringkøbing Fjord is one of the best spots for beginners in Denmark. The shallow waters and sheltered location make it perfect for learning the ropes or practicing new tricks. The fjord is approximately 300 square kilometers in size and the only connection to the North Sea.
Ringkøbing Fjord offers mostly flat water and ideal bump-and-jump conditions. However, in onshore winds, the fjord can become choppy, and the numerous short waves require good handling. Depending on the wind direction, wind cover should also be considered – sometimes it makes sense to move to a neighboring spot where conditions are considerably more pleasant.
Windsurfers looking for waves on Ringkøbing Fjord head to the North Sea when north to northwest winds blow. At Hvide Sande's new south pier, the waves are well-ordered, and the beach slopes gently enough to easily negotiate even the shorebreak.
5. Vandet Lake
Vandet Lake, a lake near Klitmøller, is an excellent spot for beginners. The calm waters and easy accessibility make it ideal for first-time windsurfers. Windsurfing is permitted on Vandet Lake only from April 1 to October 1 within the surfing zone. This zone is marked by white buoys that indicate the boundary to the national park's water area. Kitesurfing is strictly prohibited.
